Tide is a web browser that runs in your tab.
Websites load through Tide's server instead of directly, inside a normal-looking browser with tabs, bookmarks and history. There's nothing to install: open it and type an address.
What you can do
- Browse any site. Tabs, back and forward, bookmarks, history and the search engine you choose (DuckDuckGo by default).
- Pick an engine. Tide has three ways of loading sites. Ultraviolet is the default and works on the most sites. Scramjet is an alternative for sites that don't load. Tidewave is Tide's own engine and still experimental. If a page fails, Tide offers to retry it on another engine.
- Play games. A games page with games like 2048, Slope, Duck Life and Cookie Clicker, with search and favourites.
- Keep your sites on every device. A free account saves the sites on your new tab page and brings them to any browser you sign in on.
- Stay private. Your history is kept in your own browser, never on Tide's server. You can disguise the tab as Google Docs or Classroom, and the panic key (Alt+H) leaves Tide instantly.
- Use your own domain. Point a domain you own at Tide and it becomes your own address for it (see below).
Free and Premium
Tide is free to use. Premium is for people who want it faster and without ads.
| Free | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Ads | Small ads on the new tab page and at the bottom of sites | No ads at all |
| Speed | Shared with other free users | Unlimited |
| All three engines | Yes | Yes |
| Games | Yes | Yes |
| Account and synced sites | Yes | Yes |
How to get premium: get a premium key, then sign in and redeem it on your account page (tide://account). Keys add time, so you can stack several.
How to use it
- Open Tide. It takes a second to start the first time.
- Type an address (like wikipedia.org) or a search into the address bar.
- If a site doesn't load, the error page offers Try again or a retry on another engine. You can also change the engine in Settings.
- Optional: make an account to save your sites, or redeem a premium key.
Use your own domain
If you own a domain, you can make it another address for Tide:
- In your domain's DNS, add an A record pointing to
our server. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, turn the proxy off (grey cloud, "DNS only"). - Sign in to Tide and add the domain on tide://byod. Tide checks the DNS for you.
- Once it's approved, open your domain. HTTPS is set up automatically on the first visit.
Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. Premium is optional and only removes ads and the speed limit.
- Do I need an account?
- No. An account only saves your sites across devices, holds premium time and lets you add your own domain.
- Does Tide keep my browsing history?
- No. History stays in your browser. Tide's server stores your username, a scrambled password, your saved sites, premium time and, if you add one, an email for password resets.
- A site won't load. What now?
- Try another engine (Settings, or the button on the error page). Tide's error page also tells you whether the site itself is down.
- Does it work on phones?
- Yes, on any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer.
